Veuve Clicquot's Meet-the-Maker Bottle Signing!

About Bertrand Varoquier:

VCP-2018-BERTRANDVAROQUIER-BLACK-AND-WHITE-01.jpg

Bertrand Varoquier was born in 1977 in Reims, the city of coronations. From a Champagne family of several generations, Bertrand is the son of school teachers and discovered the vineyards of Champagne through successive harvests as a grape picker while in secondary school. It was through meeting inspirational people and personal discovery of the world of wine that Bertrand chose to pursue the path of wine, in particular Champagne.

Having achieved an undergraduate in Science, he chose to study Life Sciences at the University of Reims where he obtained his Bachelor of Biochemistry and then his National Diploma of Oenology in 2002. After experience in Chablis and in Touraine, he joined the team of the Reims Oenological Laboratory where he served four years as an oenologist consultant to local growers providing them with necessary advice for the improvement of their wines.

Following this consulting experience, Bertrand was offered a position by a recognized family Champagne house to oversee the winery, the vinification process and the development of its wine styles. Here Bertrand worked for four vintages applying his experience, before joining the team of oenologists at Veuve Clicquot in 2012.

As an Assistant Manager Bertrand was in charge of a cuverie ensuring smooth running of winery operations for two years. During the harvest, Bertrand managed the winemaking at external operation sites in Reims. In early 2015 he joined the Development, Innovation and Communication of Oenology team led by Pierre Casenave. The development and innovation leads Bertrand to follow and carry out cross-functional projects in cooperation with various departments of the Maison (Wine tours, winery, laboratory, Production ...). His role as wine communicator leads him to frequently collaborate with sales teams, contractors and supporters of Veuve Clicquot, both internally and externally. Bertrand travels regularly to educate and promote Veuve Clicquot wine.

ABOUT VILLA CALCINAIA:

Villa Calcinaia (pronounced “Kal-chin-aya”) is situated in the center of Chianti Classico near the town of Greve-in-Chianti. This historic estate has been home to the Counts Capponi since 1524, and is maintained by Sebastiano Capponi and his brother Niccolò. Calcinaia is the heart of the Capponi family and each generation gives new life to the fields, woods, vineyards and cellars. These wines express the family’s love for their land; with every vintage they share the hopes, worries, pride and care that come with making honest wines. Organic farming has been the standard at Villa Calcinaia since Sebastiano took over the estate’s management in 1992.  The wines are certified as being produced with organic grapes since the 2014 vintage and are labeled as such.  The 75 acres of vineyard are planted with Sangiovese, Merlot, Canaiolo, Grechetto, Vernaccia, Trebbiano, and Malvasia to name a few.  Villa Calcinaia has been recognized for producing exemplary wines from rare indigenous varietals such as Mammolo and San Forte. Through every vintage, all the wines are crafted with food in mind. They are balanced, elegant, perfumed, and savory yet refreshing with restrained vigor and intensity that ensures longevity. The Villa Calcinaia philosophy has always been: “Love for the land, respect for tradition, and the rightful pride in bearing the name of Capponi.”

Join us Thursday, November 15th from 4 - 7pm

There will be a bunch of swag and giveaways in addition to wine samples for guests! Don't miss it!

More about the 2018 Beaujolais Nouveau:

"Holiday season comes early for French wine-lovers when the Beaujolais region releases its new vintage on the third Thursday of November.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day 2018 falls on Nov. 15. Fans should anticipate another excellent vintage, according to Franck Duboeuf, son of wine legend Georges Duboeuf, whose company grew this tradition onto a global scale.

The 2018 harvest officially began on Aug. 27. Not all participating vineyards picked their Gamay grapes immediately, of course, so Duboeuf cannot yet forecast the exact profile for this year. But from producers who have harvested he saw good ripeness, good sugar and predicted a “very fruity” Beaujolais Nouveau."

Perfect for the Holidays: French Champagne Night with AR Lenoble

$30

AR Lenoble is the ”Champagne of the Moment”!

Our Owners made a recent trip to France and fell in love with their champagne as well as their story (see more from their visit here)!

Join us for an evening with Christian Holthausen, Export Sales & International Communications Director, Champagne AR Lenoble as we taste through their delicious champagnes - perfect for the holidays!

We will be sampling:

  • A.R. Lenoble Champagne Brut Intense

  • A.R. Lenoble Champagne Brut Nature Zero Dosage

  • A.R. Lenoble Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs

  • A.R. Lenoble Champagne Rose Terroirs

  • A.R. Lenoble Gentilhomme Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Chouilly

Small cheese and charcuterie boards will be served.

Must be 21+ to attend. This class size is limited to 30 attendees.
Sign up is on a first-come, first-served basis.

About AR Lenoble:

Sister-and-brother owners Anne and Antoine Malassagne are the great-grandchildren of Armand-Raphaël Graser who founded AR Lenoble in 1920. For nearly a century, AR Lenoble has remained 100% family-owned and 100% independent.

AR Lenoble believes very strongly in privileging the characteristic expression of fruit from its own vineyards located in three prime locations in Champagne: the Grand Cru village of Chouilly, the first village on the Côte des Blancs (10 hectares of chardonnay); the Premier Cru village of Bisseuil, located between Mareuil-sur-Ay and Tours-sur-Marne (6 ha of pinot noir) and home of rich and structured Pinot Noir; the village of Damery, located to the immediate east of Cumières (2 ha of meunier).

AR Lenoble was the second House in Champagne to be awarded the “Haute Valeur Environnementale” certification in recognition of more than 20 years of environmentally-friendly procedures put in place on the estate: zero use of chemical fertilisers, zero use of weed killer, drastic limits on the use of phytosanitary inputs to control mildew and powdery mildew in the vineyard, and particular attention to biodiversity and enhancement of the vineyard with hedgerows, orchards, embankments, trees and low walls.

All pressing at AR Lenoble is done by us in one of three traditional Coquard presses in Damery. AR Lenoble only uses the "Cuvée" from the first grape press in the making of its wines, never the "Taille". A combination of different vinification vessels are employed so that individual parcels are fermented accordingly in small Burgundy barrels of 225 litres, 5000-litre foudres, stainless steel tanks and/or enamel-lined tanks. Malolactic fermentation is done or not done according to parcel and year.  AR Lenoble pays particular attention to the ageing of its reserve wines, in particular by conserving them in magnums sealed with natural cork to preserve freshness and develop aromatic richness. All of our wines are aged in our historic 18th-century chalk cellars with a constant temperature of 11°C and a humidity level of 85%.

AR Lenoble was an early advocate of limiting dosage in order to let the terroir express itself purely and precisely. AR Lenoble Brut Nature Dosage Zéro was created for the first time in 1998 and is considered to be one of the first world-class examples of this style of wine.

We are constantly experimenting in an attempt to craft better and better wines each year and have a very empirical approach to winemaking in order to adapt ourselves to the quality of the grapes.

About our Presenter: Christian Holthausen, Export Sales & International Communications Director, Champagne AR Lenoble

A dual citizen of France and the United States, Christian Holthausen has been in charge of export sales and international communications at Champagne AR Lenoble since December 2014. Prior to joining Champagne AR Lenoble, Holthausen spent seven years as the International House Communications Director for Champagnes Piper-Heidsieck & Charles Heidsieck in Reims. He previously spent five years managing the wine portfolio of Rémy Cointreau USA in New York after starting his career at Champagne Veuve Clicquot in 1999.

Outside of his role at Champagne AR Lenoble, Holthausen contributes articles about food, wine and travel to a variety of publications including Decanter, The Guardian, www.jancisrobinson.com and The World of Fine Wine in the United Kingdom as well as Meininger’s Wine Business International in Germany. In 2017, he was shortlisted for Emerging Wine Writer of the Year at the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers Awards.

Aged to produce flavors defined by their purity and understated elegance, Mira wines are ready to drink upon release and are built for enjoyment after years in the cellar.

Einstein said there are only two ways to live life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. Mira which is the Latin root for "miracle" encompasses more than just a personal philosophy it captures all the process on the path to wine. The Mira logo is the symbol for good harvest.

Today Mira has vineyard blocks in acclaimed one-of-a-kind vineyards across Napa Valley. The diversity of vineyard blocks mirrors the diversity of wine produced. Mira produces hand crafted, all-natural wines year on year, each a true expression of the unique grapes that went into it. Aged to produce flavors defined by their understated elegance,. Mira is defined by its roots, anchored in the lineage and longevity of the alchemy of Napa Valley.

About Mark Carnucci, VP of Sales at Mira:

Being from a big Italian family, wine was always a part of meals, especially our big Sunday feasts. I recall always trying to sneak a sip or two with my brothers and cousins. Looking back, I doubt we were as sneaky as we thought. The inclusion of wine with family was an integral part of these gatherings. So, it is not really surprising that I developed an interest in wine.

It was In graduate school that I developed my real passion for wine. While working for a restaurant, I was placed in charge of the wine program. I became drawn to the experience wine could bring to a meal. Not just a food complement, wine was also a way to bring people together and create a feeling of camaraderie.

From working as a kid in my family’s Italian bakery to fine tuning my love of wine in college such that it became my career, I wouldn’t trade my 20 years in this business for any other work. I am thrilled now to be able to work with a winery that has a genuine appreciation of wine that reflects the quality and character of the grapes rather than merely trying to follow the next trend or fad. The team at Mira has an energy and sense of pride about the wines and what we do that makes this a wonderful place to be.

About Cloudy Bay Wines:

Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay was one of the first five wine makers to venture into Marlborough, New Zealand. At the time, it was almost an unimaginable place to set-up a vineyard. But Cloudy Bay’s founder - David Hohnen - was convinced of its potential to produce great wine and invested in the best land of the region. Since then, Marlborough has risen to become New Zealand’s leading wine region, as well as one of the finest winemaking locations in the world.

The winery was named after Cloudy Bay, a body of water explorer Captain James Cook came across during his voyage to New Zealand in 1770. His discovery coincided with flooding in the region, which washed large amounts of sediment into the sea. Noticing the water’s opaque appearance, Cook cleverly christened the area Cloudy Bay.

Today, Cloudy Bay not only captures the essence of Marlborough but also embodies New Zealand's luxury to the world. The luxury of space and time, of intimate moments and nature’s rarest qualities.

About Joseph Phelps Vineyards:

When Joe Phelps established Joseph Phelps Vineyards, the fearless vision and gumption with which he’d built his construction company was now focused on the wine industry. He left no stone unturned, learning everything he could about grape growing and winemaking, mostly through trial and error, but also through early associations with people like Joe Heitz, Jack Davies, Louis Martini and Robert Mondavi. He surrounded himself with experts, experimented constantly and applied what he’d learned through traveling, reading and collecting to producing wines that could be counted among the finest in the world. In the early days, dividing his time between the winery and Hensel Phelps Construction Company, Joe worked tirelessly, routinely putting in fourteen-hour days. After he sold Hensel Phelps Construction Company to focus solely on Joseph Phelps Vineyards, he was often the first one to arrive at the winery and the last one to leave. But Joe also liked to enjoy himself, and to share his love of wine, food, and life with his family and the many friends he made in Napa Valley. He cooked and entertained often and liberally opened bottles from his private wine collection. At the helm of Joseph Phelps Vineyards for over 30 years, Joe worked with other Napa Valley vintners on a host of issues and initiatives, generously offering his time and wise counsel. Joe quietly gave back, sharing his success with organizations and people who still feel the influence of his many gifts to this day.

Lynn Phelps Finch, Joe’s Daughter “When dad started out, he did his own marketing.  I remember driving with him and mom around Colorado with a case of wine in the trunk.  Mom and I would sit in the car outside of places like Boulder Liquor Mart and Applejack in Denver while he took a couple of bottles in to taste with the owners.”

About Donnafugata:

DONNAFUGATA PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL WINES WITH THE GOAL OF PAYING TRIBUTE TO SICILIAN CULTURE AND PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT

In 1983, the experienced winegrowing couple Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo decided to invest in a new Sicilian project that they called “Donnafugata.” Their vision was to create a contemporary winegrowing operation based around three sites in western Sicily and to produce a range of international and indigenous variety wines to showcase the potential of Sicily.

Today the estate is comprised of an historic family cellar in Marsala that dates back to 1851, a 667-acre estate at Contessa Entellina planted to a diverse range of grapes, and a third cellar on the volcanic island of Pantelleria, where Donnafugata cultivates 168 acres of Zibibbo vineyards. The company employs state-of-the-art, sustainable viticulture techniques at all three estates for wines of the highest quality.

At Donnafugata, stewardship of the environment is taken as seriously as the production of wine. The winery was one of the first wineries in Italy to implement solar energy; which now powers 100% of their operation.  In  2015 the island of Pantelleria was given UNESCO certification recognizing its unique vine training method
