About Joseph Phelps Vineyards:

When Joe Phelps established Joseph Phelps Vineyards, the fearless vision and gumption with which he’d built his construction company was now focused on the wine industry. He left no stone unturned, learning everything he could about grape growing and winemaking, mostly through trial and error, but also through early associations with people like Joe Heitz, Jack Davies, Louis Martini and Robert Mondavi. He surrounded himself with experts, experimented constantly and applied what he’d learned through traveling, reading and collecting to producing wines that could be counted among the finest in the world. In the early days, dividing his time between the winery and Hensel Phelps Construction Company, Joe worked tirelessly, routinely putting in fourteen-hour days. After he sold Hensel Phelps Construction Company to focus solely on Joseph Phelps Vineyards, he was often the first one to arrive at the winery and the last one to leave. But Joe also liked to enjoy himself, and to share his love of wine, food, and life with his family and the many friends he made in Napa Valley. He cooked and entertained often and liberally opened bottles from his private wine collection. At the helm of Joseph Phelps Vineyards for over 30 years, Joe worked with other Napa Valley vintners on a host of issues and initiatives, generously offering his time and wise counsel. Joe quietly gave back, sharing his success with organizations and people who still feel the influence of his many gifts to this day.

Lynn Phelps Finch, Joe’s Daughter “When dad started out, he did his own marketing.  I remember driving with him and mom around Colorado with a case of wine in the trunk.  Mom and I would sit in the car outside of places like Boulder Liquor Mart and Applejack in Denver while he took a couple of bottles in to taste with the owners.”

About Donnafugata:

DONNAFUGATA PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL WINES WITH THE GOAL OF PAYING TRIBUTE TO SICILIAN CULTURE AND PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT

In 1983, the experienced winegrowing couple Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo decided to invest in a new Sicilian project that they called “Donnafugata.” Their vision was to create a contemporary winegrowing operation based around three sites in western Sicily and to produce a range of international and indigenous variety wines to showcase the potential of Sicily.

Today the estate is comprised of an historic family cellar in Marsala that dates back to 1851, a 667-acre estate at Contessa Entellina planted to a diverse range of grapes, and a third cellar on the volcanic island of Pantelleria, where Donnafugata cultivates 168 acres of Zibibbo vineyards. The company employs state-of-the-art, sustainable viticulture techniques at all three estates for wines of the highest quality.

At Donnafugata, stewardship of the environment is taken as seriously as the production of wine. The winery was one of the first wineries in Italy to implement solar energy; which now powers 100% of their operation.  In  2015 the island of Pantelleria was given UNESCO certification recognizing its unique vine training method

The importance of wine making across the Roman Empire cannot be overstated. Grapes were transported, vines were planted and wine was used freely in both celebrations and everyday life. As the Roman Empire receded and the rise of the Church took its place the Monks of the Middle Ages, often working in solitude expanded upon the Roman influences. It is widely accepted that both the Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir were initially discovered in the forests of Burgundy situated South of Paris in the fertile and verdant region that today commands the highest prices for this exquisite product.

Join Bin 526 in welcoming one of Burgundy’s most prestigious and historic wineries - Domaine Chanson! Attendees will taste 6 very special French wines and be entertained by a truly amazing story teller, International Vice President Mr. Vincent Wallays of Domaine Chanson.

Special food pairings for each wine are also included!

Gordon Russell – Senior Winemaker Bio:

Gordon Russell has established himself as one of New Zealand's most recognized winemaking identities with his passionate approach to winemaking, and the enormous success he has achieved with his wines in tastings and competitions.

Born in New Plymouth, New Zealand, Gordon’s desire to travel took him to England and Europe for three years after university. He had always been interested in different flavors and trying new food so during his time abroad he naturally also developed an appreciation for fine wine.

In 1986 Gordon returned to New Zealand, just when the wine styles for which New Zealand has become highly regarded were beginning to emerge. Gordon was appointed as Esk Valley winemaker in 1993, after working for Villa Maria in Auckland as a cellar hand from 1987 and then as assistant winemaker to Grant Edmonds at Esk Valley from 1990.

Gordon strives to make wines that tell the story of the vineyards from which they came. Experience has taught him that with attention to detail in vineyard, the winemaking process becomes simple and a hands off affair. Esk Valley’s aim is to produce a natural style of wine utilising wild yeast and long term lees ageing. These are modern styles of wine made in a hand crafted manner.

The Wonders of Wonderment Wine with Winemaker & Owner: Stephanie Cook

AboutUsImg.jpg

$25

Charleston local Stephanie Cook is in the house! Stephanie is the owner, winemaker and one woman show of Wonderment Wine! She will be pouring 6 of her scoring wines here at Bin 526.

Cheese and Charcuterie will be provided.

Presenter Bio – Born and raised in Leesville, South Carolina, Stephanie began traveling the world as a fashion model, living and working in London, Milan and Istanbul. Landing back in South Carolina, this time in Charleston, she turned her lifelong love of food into a new career, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a culinary degree from Johnson & Wales University. After staging in a restaurant in Milan, she returned to the incredible food, history and beauty of Charleston. Stephanie put her hospitality and entrepreneurial skills to the test, creating and leading the successful special events and catering company, Bridgeside Events, which she later sold.

All the while, her secret dream to become a winemaker waited patiently for its moment. After losing her Dad unexpectedly, the man who made homemade Muscadine wine in the laundry room, it motivated her to make her dream of becoming a winemaker become a reality. Not long after, she met Bob Biale of Robert Biale Vineyards at a industry event in New York City and informed Bob that she was coming to work for him. True to her word, she worked that year's harvest in Napa, soaking up every bit of knowledge she could.

In 2011, she bought her own grapes and made her first Pinot Noir and two Zinfandels. In 2012, she continued honing her skills at Spottswoode, a family wine estate in St. Helena. And, fell ever more in love with winemaking. In 2013, she was the senior intern at Anomaly Vineyards working with acclaimed winemaker Mark Porembski. In spring of 2014 Stephanie decided to go down under to New Zealand, specifically to Marlborough and spend 8 weeks in the role of Vintage Winemaker for Spy Valley Wines. During the 2014 Napa/Sonoma harvest Stephanie worked harvest at Staglin Family Vineyard with winemaker Frederik Johansson. The rest, as they say, is history - or, as we like to say, a balancing act.

About Patrick Emerson: An Englishman by birth, Advanced Sommelier Patrick Emerson grew up making elderberry/apple wine with his Mom, brewing ale with his Dad and drinking cheap Bordeaux with his mates at an early age. A renaissance man who was once bitten by the Thespian bug that led to many hours of working behind the stick in Cape Town, New York and LA at all hours of the night, Patrick finally saw the light and traded in his greasepaint and tap shoes for that of Wine Warrior. He now thrives by pursuing his passion of the vine (more practical than treading the boards for his family) and has enjoyed fine vino for over 20 years. It was there she learned to love wine as well and decided to create a career based around both.

After returning to North Carolina, Sara spent several years coordinating wine programs for restaurants, working with distributor giants Empire Distributing and Paterno Imports, and finally with Moët Hennessy developing their on-premise and high-end account visibility. Presenter Bio –  Weston’s great-grandfather, John Montagu, was an automobile pioneer at the turn of the last century. Being a British Lord and in Parliament, he was instrumental in much of the early automotive legislation and even gave the future Edward VII his first car ride. He was friends with Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, and his secretary served as the model for the Rolls-Royce hood ornament – The Spirit of Ecstasy – which we still see on R-R cars today. Silver Ghost derives its name from John Mantagu’s favorite car – the 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. And, like its name, the wine itself is filled with layers of richness, culture and authenticity.

Presenter Bio – Phil Abram - General Manager, Robert Sinskey Vineyards

Phil was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, where Food and Beverage usually meant spicy chicken wings and cold Canadian beer. Aside from the occasional Chardonnay that made its way into the fridge around the holidays, wine to Phil was as foreign a concept as a moderate winter.

Phil made his way East across New York State, graduating from Syracuse University with degrees in Finance and Supply Chain Management. If you told him then that the Hospitality Industry would be where he applied those trades, his reaction would have sounded something like sarcastic laughter followed by a “keep dreaming” rebuttal. But, upon arriving in New York City to pursue a career in the Stock Market, exposure to a new world of food culture (and a sweetheart to impress) drew his interest in a different direction. He landed a moonlight barback job with AvroKO Hospitality Group and the hook was set. He spent a year working up the ranks of almost every job in the restaurant until a glass of Sancerre turned wine curiosity into a new focus.

Phil then trained with the Court of Master Sommeliers at the International Culinary Center by day and worked as a Floor Sommelier by night, tasting everything he could get in a glass. When Napa Valley called his name, the opportunity for a terroir believer to live at the epicenter of California wine was too much to pass up. He spent five years in the downtown Napa restaurant scene as General Manager and Beverage Director of two restaurants before a chance meeting with Rob Sinskey opened the door for him to join the Robert Sinskey Vineyards team."

About Patrick Emerson:

An Englishman by birth, Advanced Sommelier Patrick Emerson grew up making elderberry/apple wine with his Mom, brewing ale with his Dad and drinking cheap Bordeaux with his mates at an early age. Favorite regions include Burgundy, Champagne, Jura, and Piedmont.
